Packaging analysis
These CD packages were created using a textile based design. The materials used would not be that of a regular, shop bought CD. This implies that the CD inside was one of importance or interest, or even a keepsake disc to be kept. By the use of a more expensive material and intricate design of the protecting layer, the disc itself increases in importance to the audience. The plain, natural material along with the map like design, printed on the packaging gives a rustic, cultured feel on the design. The shiny brown button that holds the clasp which secures the packaging is bead like and is a great feature to the design.
The design itself has envelope style folds which denote receiving a letter and would appeal to an older audience that could reminisce on receiving letters from pen pals, family members and friends. This is a great idea as it keeps to traditional design, along with the combination of naturalistic, simplistic and neutral feel. The envelope style creates a more intense feeling of anticipation. This would be remembered by the audience as they waited patiently for their letter to arrive, checking the post every day and anticipating a reply from their pen pal.
The design also has a leather backing. This is a luxury add on to the package and is a great, hard waring and natural looking finish. It can be put down on a surface and stay in place as well as not get the material on the top dirty or dusty. It is also a good combination of textures in order to ensure the right aesthetics and ergonomics of the design.
I think this CD packaging is very good, it is unique and interesting as well as innovative and fun. The design also has downsides of being expensive to make and buy. Although it is a great idea I don't think that this design is relevant to my song of the summer. Aspects of the work are very interesting and have inspired my thoughts.
This CD packaging is an interactive and fun piece which brings reality in to the design and ergonomics of CD packaging. The use of a daily piece of kitchen equipment most of us use and the simple perks we find, such as the toast popping up is a great way to enforce a playful and interesting way of getting to your CD. Daily Bread, a CD compilation of Gospel songs. The term 'Daily Bread' is usually used to represent the daily readings from the bible. This term interests a feeling of dedication, sustenance.
The shape of a toaster and toast is not only used to represent the term, but also to represent that these songs can be a very good way to start your days. The interesting and innovative CD packaging is simple, yet effective. The simplicity of the white packaging and typeface chosen works well. The font is a clean, simple type with no specific character or interest as it appeals to all religious people, and will not define a specific target audience. The white design signifies a purity, easy listening and calm, which appeals to those peaceful and integral gospel listeners.
The design itself is very inspiring as the reusable, eco friendly design is also a very fun and appealing style of packaging. The idea is innovative and interesting as well as humorous. It appeals to those who are lighthearted, fun and positive as the simple design and use of no over exaggerated and over bearing print or type appeals to those not guilty of materialism and out to enjoy the finer things in life. I find this design very inspiring as it is interactive and fun, this is one of the attributes of my song of the summer.
This great design packaging idea is both fun and interesting. The packaging itself uses the exact same design for each CD case with a different set of designs on each CD, which alternates and diversifies the emotion and characteristics of each character. The use of two separate designs on one disc, one above and another below, means that consumers can alternate the personalities of the characters by switching the expression or feature.
The designs on the CDs feature fangs in a a vampiric, cheesy, cartoon like smile. Red lips, pouting. A toothless, wide open smile. Drooling closed mouth. These are very interesting and anime/ manga style expressions as they use extremes to denote an emotion. The interactive fun of being able to change the expression of the character is entertaining and aesthetically pleasing. By using the mouth as the defining, emotional feature, the audience asses the content of the characters closed eyes, and adds the overall feeling.
The use of simplistic, matching design on each outer packaging, for both male and female audiences, implies that the CD inside is for both genders. By using a bright pink on the female design, denoting a generic convention of a female product, as well as an anime theme shown through the bold pink, of the hair and features. And well as a male design in a simple black, with similar, larger features then the female character and a smart, businessman like hairstyle.
This packaging is a great and interesting design as it is not only interactive but also holds a theme, regardless of appeal to gender, as well as giving audiences the option to choose which product or character they would prefer to have, as well as the feature to choose the emotion that they have. The product is a very consumer pleasing product, is very appealing and works well. Other then downsides of expenses and cost to make the product is inspiring and I will definitely be using attributes of the design to create my CD packaging.
Stencilling
Miles Donovan
My first attempts
These stencil style pieces of art, inspired by Miles Donovan, for CD packaging design ideas were created digitally, heres how I created mine.
-The first step is to take a photograph, preferably with a plain white background, to make the editing process easier.
- Using adobe photoshop open the photo with this programme and increase the contrast of the photograph to enhance dark areas, this will help when adding stencil effects. (Image> Adjustments> Brightness/contrast)
- Now, you must duplicate the layer (Layer> Duplicate layer)
- The next step is to increase the threshold of the photograph, this will give it a stencil style effect. Tip: Hide one layer at a time to add effects, this makes it easier to see differences in both layers (Image> Adjustments> Threshold)
-Now move the first arrow forward to create your preferred top layer of stencilling. The details of the photograph must be visible for example the eyes and face of the subject.
- Next, moving on to your second layer and repeating the threshold step (Image> Adjustments> Threshold) Although making sure more contrast appears and that the body of the stencil is bold.
- Finally, by changing the colour of your second layer you are able to create a great, two layered stencil. This is done by (Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation> Check the box that reads 'colorize'> Increase lightness> and choose your preferred colour)
- Lastly, make all layers visible and see your final, stencil style masterpiece!
